Cape Town, located at the tip of Africa is the heart and soul of South Africa. Known as the “Mother City”. Cape Town is one of South Africa’s most beautiful hot spots to visit. Diverse in its culture, Cape Town is home to all. Cape Town Minstrel Carnival “coon carnival” What all started in 1834 as a celebration of freedom for the end of slavery has now become one of the longest annual traditions held in Cape Town. Parading down the streets with their brightly colored clothing, banjos, painted faces, and traditional folk song they bring life to the Cape. This event kicks off in January. Victoria and Alfred Waterfront Named after Prince Alfred and Queen Victoria, the V&A Waterfront is located near Table Bay. Since the wharfs origination in 1860, it has undergone some drastic changes over 140 years and is still continuing to grow. The wharf has about 400 shopping and food stores. In addition, it has an aquarium, exploration center, craft market, movie theatre, hotel, maritime museum, and gem stone patch, known as the scratch patch. Canal Walk Fairly new to the Cape, Canal Walk is the largest shopping center in Africa with over 400 stores. Adjacent to the mall is Dockside the largest club in South Africa and Ratanga Junction, cape town’s only amusement park. Grand West Casino With its 66 tables and 1750 slot machines, Grand West Casino is a beautiful Victorian style casino located in Goodwood. Not only does this upscale structure cater to the 18 and older population it also caters to all other ages. On the outside of the building they have a castle established for the kids with carnival rides and a go-cart track. The establishment also has a movie theatre, food court and ice rink. There is a club located in the building named, Jackson Square, with its New Orleans style is a big attraction to the teenage crowd. Robben Island Once used as an institutional confinement for the banished and social outcasts against apartheid has today become one of Cape Town’s leading tourist attractions. Located 12 kilometers off the coast of Cape Town in the Atlantic Ocean, Robben Island has been converted into a museum. It was the prison that held former president, Nelson Mandela captive for 18years. Table Mountain Table Mountain, the Cape’s most famous and loved attraction is visited by more than 2500 visitors a day. The 65 passenger cable car takes to the sky at 1087m to the top of the mountain where visitors can enjoy a breath taking view of the Cape. The mountain is home to many different flora and fauna including the dassie or rock rabbit. It is a must see when in the Cape. |
