We stem from a collectivist culture where connectedness plays an important role in our lives. The coloured populations have a unique set of values, norms and culture. Our primary languages are English and Afrikaans. Afrikaans is similar to Dutch. During the apartheid years we were forced to learn two languages, namely English and Afrikaans. Instead of English, some would choose the latter as their main language. This resulted in a uniquely flat yet beautiful accent. In recent years, since the end of apartheid, other languages have been adopted. The official languages today are Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.
National AnthemNkosi sikelel' iAfrikaMaluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo, Yizwa imithandazo yethu, Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo. Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso, O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho, O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso, Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika. Uit die blou van onse hemel, Uit die diepte van ons see, Oor ons ewige gebergtes, Waar die kranse antwoord gee, Sounds the call to come together, And united we shall stand, Let us live and strive for freedom, In South Africa our land. |
